From the Cold War division of\u00a0 Europe arose a need to reach out and share ideas on the mutual challenges that lay ahead. The first-ever European Meeting of Cultural Journals was held on neutral ground in Switzerland in 1983.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1995, a meeting in Vienna extended its invite to journals from the former Soviet bloc, and, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/widening-the-context\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfor the first time, addressed the media revolution triggered by the internet\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until 1997 in Moscow that the potential of the World Wide Web came into the spotlight, leading to the establishment of the network\u2019s own web magazine, Eurozine in 1998.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018As fast as that\u2026\u2019 points out Judith-Vidal Hall, \u2018it was the impassioned tearing down of the wall that divided Europe physically\u2019 that followed the stream of journals wanting to find common ground and build a shared culture. \u2018This remains the very precious discovery and legacy of Eurozine\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/about-eurozine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eurozine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is partnered with over 100 journals, magazines and institutions from most European countries, offering translations and language versions beside its English language publishing.\u00a0 The fight for space and attention continues as technology changes, yet, some journals are still rooted in print and still hold skepsis about the Internet as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was somewhat an understandable and natural move to use the Internet for further dissemination and a wider audience\u201d points out Andrea Zerdebauer, \u201cthe second reason why it was so compelling for print magazines to use it as a tool was because of its archival function\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn essence \u2026 the editors who doubted the relevance of the Internet, suggesting that it\u2019s mostly porn and then tidbits on the side\u2026 they were right\u201d. Carl Henrik Fredriksson provokes the future of cultural ever expanding content, questioning what the future of Eurozine holds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Today\u2019s guests\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/authors\/judith-vidal-hall\/\"><b>Judith Vidal-Hall<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a member of the Eurozine Advisory Board and has been recently appointed to the board of Centre Librexpression. She is a former editor of the free expression magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indexoncensorship.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Index on Censorship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Walter Famler <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a publisher, harmonium player, and the general secretary of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alte-schmiede.at\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alte Schmiede Kunstverein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vienna. He has been a long-term editor of Eurozine\u2019s founding partner journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/journals\/wespennest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wespennest.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Andrea Zederbauer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is co-editor of the Eurozine partner journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/journals\/wespennest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wespennest <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a translator from Swedish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/authors\/carl-henrik-fredriksson\/\"><b>Carl Henrik Fredriksson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a Swedish literary critic, columnist, essayist, and translator based in Vienna.
