However, this link is more conspicuous in men.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A team of researchers in the U.S. and Israel used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the amounts of fat in subjects\u2019 liver, abdomen, and pancreas. Higher pancreatic fat correlated to lower cognition and smaller volumes of brain regions linked to Alzheimer\u2019s\u2014primarily in men. These findings were published this week in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com%2Fdoi%2F10.1002%2Foby.24004&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ceurekalert%40aaas.org%7Cf902dd521af34bef3bda08dc3304c5b0%7C2eebd8ff9ed140f0a15638e5dfb3bc56%7C0%7C0%7C638441342807123749%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Vcsc752K5LaDDRnliuXNi8R7defNTMr6S675eTeNsz4%3D&amp;reserved=0&amp;adobe_mc=MCMID%3D57925740584478697751025380830044371692%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1708706591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \"><em>Obesity<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Studying people at high risk of Alzheimer\u2019s in middle age is important because the underlying signs of the disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">the most common form of dementia<\/a>, begin developing 20 to 30 years before symptoms appear, says <a href=\"https:\/\/ifh.rutgers.edu\/faculty_staff\/michal-schnaider-beeri-phd-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Michal Schnaider Beeri, Ph.D.<\/a>, director of the Herbert and Jacqueline Krieger Klein Alzheimer\u2019s Research Center at the <a href=\"https:\/\/brainhealthinstitute.rutgers.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Rutgers Brain Health Institute<\/a>, who led the study.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to know who are those who are in a bad trajectory, in order to do everything possible to prevent it,\u201d she tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cAnd, alternatively, who are those that despite their very high risk [are] not in a bad trajectory, and then to learn from their resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16216938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Previous research<\/a> has shown a link between obesity and brain health\u2014lower cognitive functioning and higher dementia risk\u2014traditionally using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyweight\/assessing\/bmi\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">body mass index (BMI)<\/a>. But Beeri\u2019s team notes that BMI, a calculation of body fat based on your height and weight, doesn\u2019t account for body fat distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we are the first to show that fat <em>on<\/em> the pancreas is related to poorer cognitive function and a smaller cortical brain volume in people who are in midlife,\u201d Beeri says. \u201cThe associations that we found between fat and cognition and brain volumes were not found for BMI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beeri isn\u2019t surprised the pancreas is at the center of the study results, largely because of its relationship to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/type2.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">type 2 diabetes<\/a>. Higher pancreatic fat correlated to lower cognition and smaller volumes of brain regions linked to Alzheimer\u2019s\u2014primarily in men.<\/figcaption><p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is at high risk of Alzheimer\u2019s?<\/h2>\n<p>Age is the greatest risk factor for the neurodegenerative disease, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/what-is-alzheimers\/causes-and-risk-factors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a>, as most people with the condition are 65 or older. After 65, your risk of developing the disease doubles every five years. Compared to older white people, older Black people are twice as likely to have Alzheimer\u2019s, while older Latinos are 1 \u00bd times as likely.<\/p>\n<p>Serious medical conditions including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol may increase your risk. A link also exists between traumatic brain injury and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>People who have a parent or sibling with Alzheimer\u2019s are more likely to develop the disease, and that risk increases if more than one family member is ill, according to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association. This study drew 204 participants from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33044181\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Israel Registry for Alzheimer\u2019s Prevention (IRAP) study<\/a> whose parents had been diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s. They were cognitively asymptomatic, between the ages of 40 and 65 with an average age of 59, and 60% female.<\/p>\n<p>IRAP participants already had completed neuropsychological tests in these categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11752477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Episodic memory<\/a>: recollection of past experiences<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4084861\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Executive function<\/a>: mental processes including self-control and creative thinking<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4207727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Working memory<\/a>: readily accessible information that can be used for tasks such as problem solving<\/li>\n<li>Language: includes verbal IQ<\/li>\n<li>Global cognition: overall cognitive function<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is abdominal fat linked to brain health?<\/h2>\n<p>All participants in this latest study underwent imaging of their abdominal organs. Of those, 142 also had a structural volumetric brain MRI. In addition to total gray matter, these scans measured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">specific brain regions related to Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3548359\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Hippocampus<\/a>: learning and memory<\/li>\n<li>Inferior frontal gyrus (IFG): speech production<\/li>\n<li>Middle frontal gyrus (MFG): literacy and numeracy<\/li>\n<li>Superior frontal gyrus (SFG): working memory, spatial processing, impulse control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Higher pancreatic fat percentage was linked to smaller IFG volume, lower global cognition, lower executive function, and lower episodic memory function, most notably in men. In women, higher pancreatic fat was linked to smaller hippocampal volume; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/what-is-alzheimers\/women-and-alzheimer-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">about two-thirds of U.S. Alzheimer\u2019s patients are women<\/a>, and the hippocampus is <a href=\"https:\/\/molecularneurodegeneration.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/1750-1326-6-85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">one of the first regions<\/a> affected by the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat seems to happen is that when fat is sitting on a certain organ, the fat itself or the organ has certain secreted factors that are not secreted in a normal way,\u201d Beeri explains. \u201cSome of those cross the blood-brain barrier and then they do the damage or, alternatively, they\u2019re protective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers didn\u2019t find an association between liver fat percentage and cognitive functioning or regional brain volumes for either sex. In both men and women, higher liver fat was associated with smaller total gray matter volume, but this link lost statistical significance when the data were adjusted for participants\u2019 cardiovascular risk factors.<\/p>\n<p>Beeri and her team measured two types of belly fat: subcutaneous, located just under the skin, and visceral, which is buried in the abdominal cavity. In men, higher subcutaneous fat was tied to smaller MFG volume. Higher visceral fat was tied to larger SFG and MFG volumes, but also only in men. These sections are related to Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/figcaption><p>Kateryna Kon\/Science Photo Library via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is abdominal fat more strongly tied to brain health in men?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t really know why [the] strongest effect is among men,\u201d Beeri tells <em>Fortune<\/em>, noting this puzzle provides the natural next step in her team\u2019s research. \u201cWe are hoping to disentangle some differences between sexes in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One possible explanation is that men and women not only store body fat differently, but also do so in ways that change with age, says <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrPlantel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Dr. Nisha Patel<\/a>, an obesity medicine physician in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen [have] more visceral adiposity from the get-go, and then women catch up when they transition through menopause,\u201d Patel tells <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cWhat really happens because of the low estrogen is a repartitioning of fat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before women hit menopause, however, estrogen may offer neuroprotection, Patel says: \u201cWe do know that there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8628183\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">estrogen receptors in the brain<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Future studies on the connection between abdominal fat and brain health should entail a larger sample size more representative of the middle-aged adult population, including people without a family history of Alzheimer\u2019s, Beeri and her colleagues noted. Factors such as participants\u2019 dietary and exercise habits will be key.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Beeri says the most important thing for people to remember is that being healthy in old age is a lifelong effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is good reason to believe that fat will affect your brain deleteriously,\u201d she says. \u201cEverything that you can do, at least on a lifestyle level, to protect yourself from that, do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patel calls obesity treatment \u201ca lifelong marathon\u201d and cautions against \u201cgimmicky,\u201d quick-fix diets and workouts that claim to blast belly fat.
