While humor acts as a response to the crumbling state of the world, how \u2018PC\u2019 can someone be when dealing with offensive jokes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comedy changes with the times, and can be a powerful tool for social critique. As comedian Aislinn Kane, founder of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gaysandtheyscomedy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gays and Theys Comedy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vienna, puts it: \u2018Comedy is the most honest way of portraying what our current societal values are.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through \u2018punching up\u2019; making fun of the church, police, state, public personas, or any kind of politician, the genre can thematize anything from authoritarian regimes to everyday misconceptions. How far one can go remains negotiable, as doing so can be met with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/cancel-culture-vs-execute-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serious political consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As opposed to the prevailing culture of jumping to conclusions, humor opens people up to other perspectives. Homer Hakim, owner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecomedypub.at\/\">Comedy Pub<\/a> in Vienna, clearly says that he never wants to tell anybody what to joke about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comedy isn\u2019t inherently fair though. It has long been a vehicle of negative stereotyping, be it queer and transphobia, racism, sexism, ableism, etc. Comedy as a profession is itself known for discriminating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oftentimes, those who most complain about \u2018cancel culture\u2019 are in positions of power, known for their problematic views and stances. It sometimes goes as far as show business billionaires complaining about how they just can\u2019t say things anymore, because those women\/trans people\/abuse survivors\/homeless folks and other tyrants just won\u2019t know how to take a joke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of \u2018punching down\u2019, Jannis Panagiotidis uses the reference of \u2018punching sideways\u2019; meaning to make fun of people belonging to the same group as one\u2019s own. To avoid offending others, but to leave room to joke about the nuances of our diverse lived experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aislinn Kane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a California-born, Vienna-based comedian and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gaysandtheyscomedy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gays and They Comedy <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Vienna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jannis Panagiotidis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the scientific director at the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET) at the University of Vienna.
