Tristan Thompson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has three brothers<\/a> and a very close relationship with all of them. The professional basketball player, 32, has talked about being a father figure to his younger siblings over the years. \u201cI\u2019m like the big daddy with all of them,\u201d he said in a 2016 interview<\/a>. \u201cI have to make sure I hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tristan is especially close with his 17-year-old brother Amari Thompson<\/strong><\/a>, who has epilepsy and requires constant support and help from others. The NBA star stepped up in a big way for Amari when he was granted temporary custody<\/a> of his little brother after their mom Andrea\u00a0<\/strong>died<\/a>, and now he\u2019s reportedly petitioned to be his sole legal guardian after claiming he can\u2019t locate their father, Trevor Thompson<\/strong>. Trevor also apparently failed to pay any child support, which he was ordered to pay after Andrea assumed sole legal guardianship of him in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince then, Trevor Douglas Thompson has effectively abandoned the proposed ward; he failed to pay any child support despite the court order and has not been in contact with the proposed ward or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014,\u201d court documents revealed, according to ET Online<\/em><\/a>. \u201cHe has done nothing to support or raise the proposed ward since then and has relinquished all rights to have any say in the proposed ward\u2019s care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal prior to that date,\u201d Tristan wrote about his father in the documents. \u201cMy only contact with Trevor Thompson in the past nine years was a brief interaction when he appeared at my mother\u2019s funeral. I have no knowledge of his current or recent whereabouts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most recently, on February 26, 2024, the courts officially approved for Tristan to be the official caregiver and legal guardian for Amari, per docs obtained by\u00a0TMZ<\/em><\/a>. It was also revealed that the teen would receive $103,475 in inheritance from his late mother\u2019s estate. The new ruling comes five months after Tristan formally filed a petition to become Amari\u2019s guardian.<\/p>\n

Tristan may have made a lot of mistakes in his relationship with Khlo\u00e9 Kardashian<\/strong><\/a>, but as court documents show, he\u2019s never wavered from being an amazing big brother to Amari. Below is everything to know about Amari, his condition, and his special bond with Tristan.<\/p>\n

Who Is Amari Thompson?<\/h2>\n

Amari is the youngest of the four Thompson brothers. His late mom, Andrea<\/strong>, and his father, Trevor<\/strong> Thompson<\/strong>, welcomed him on July 27, 2006. Amari was raised by his mother Andrea until her untimely passing<\/a> on January 6, 2023, at the age of 53. Amari does not have a relationship with his father. In addition to Tristan, Amari\u2019s other brothers are Dishawn Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0and Daniel Thompson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amari Thompson Has Epilepsy<\/h2>\n

Tristan\u2019s brother has epilepsy, which is a brain disorder that causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. Amari, who is wheelchair-bound, cannot live on his own and needs around-the-clock help. Luckily, Tristan has always stepped up to support his brother. In 2014, the athlete founded The Amari Thompson Foundation to honor his sibling and others who are battling the health condition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After starting the organization, Tristan and Andrea released a video, via YouTube<\/a>, to express their reasoning for starting the foundation. Amari also appeared in the 2014 clip<\/a>. \u201cI began the Amari Thompson Foundation for epilepsy awareness on behalf of my brother. Watch the video for more info,\u201d Tristan captioned the tweet of the clip in August 2014.<\/p>\n

During the October 5 episode of The Kardashians<\/em>, Khlo\u00e9 explained to Kris Jenner<\/strong><\/a> and Kim Kardashian<\/strong><\/a> what was going on with Amari\u2019s health<\/a>. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s bad and good, just like that we didn\u2019t have any answers really. Like, his MRIS and EEGs and EKGs are all the same,\u201d Khlo\u00e9 said. She added, \u201cHe has the worst type of seizures you can have.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mom-of-two revealed that Amari is in a \u201cscary place\u201d right now \u201cbecause once he hits age 20 is when it will be really bad if we can\u2019t have any improvements.\u201d At the time, Khlo\u00e9 and Tristan had decided to have a physical therapist come to the house to work with Amari.<\/p>\n

Tristan has been a great big brother and an even better father figure to Amari over the years. In March 2022, Tristan talked about how Amari \u2014 who has epilepsy \u2014 inspires him during an interview with NBC Sports<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy younger brother fights each and every day,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cMost 16-year-olds can enjoy life and have the freedom and be able to experience things with their peers. It\u2019s harder for him.\u201d He went on to explain how Amari is a major motivator in his life. \u201cHe motives me. Why not keep working each day? There\u2019s no reason for me not to get up and push to be not only a better basketball player<\/a> but a better human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

In July 2023, Tristan took to Instagram<\/a> to celebrate Amari\u2019s birthday. He also remembered their late mother in his caption. \u201cHappy birthday to my sweet baby brother Amari! I love you forever! We Miss you mommy,\u201d he captioned the post, along with a red heart emoji. In the snapshot, Tristan and Amari posed together outside.<\/p>\n

After Tristan and Amari\u2019s mother died, Tristan filed legal documents in September 2023 to become his younger brother\u2019s guardian<\/a>. The docs revealed that their dad Trevor has been \u201cabsent\u201d throughout Amari\u2019s life. On September 20, Tristan was granted temporary guardianship of Amari, according to\u00a0PEOPLE<\/em>.<\/a> The court reportedly declared that there was both \u201csufficient evidence\u201d and \u201cgood cause\u201d for Tristan to become Amari\u2019s guardian for the time being.<\/p>\n

In the February 2024 court documents, Tristan said he\u2019s trying to gain legal guardianship of Amari in order to manage his finances and healthcare, which has been made particularly complicated by the fact that the teen is a Canadian citizen, but has been living and receiving medical care in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Amari is required to return to Canada there are no relatives there that have the ability or means to support Amari, and he cannot be provided the level of care and support he is receiving in the United States while in my custody,\u201d Tristan\u2019s petition says. \u201c[I want] to ensure that Amari continues to have a happy and fulfilling life and to provide him with the best care possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amari Thompson\u2019s Relationship With Khlo\u00e9 Kardashian<\/h2>\n

Amari has so much love in his life from everyone, including his brother\u2019s ex. Khlo\u00e9 threw Amari\u2019s 17th birthday party<\/a> at her house in July 2023. The reality star shared a tribute<\/a> to Amari on his birthday, writing, \u201cSomeone is 17 today!!!! Happy birthday sweet sweet Amari!!! We are all so blessed to have been touched by an angel such as you. you are truly one of Gods greatest treasures.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Khlo\u00e9 did more for Amari than just host a party. After Andrea\u2019s death, Khlo\u00e9 took in Tristan and Amari<\/a> and let them live at her house at the beginning of 2023 after Tristan\u2019s roof caved in from bad weather. She revealed this during the season 3 finale of The Kardashians<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmari is 16, and he is severely disabled,\u201d the Good American co-founder said in a confessional on the Hulu show. \u201cIt\u2019s just really sad because we don\u2019t know what he knows or doesn\u2019t know, cognitively,\u201d she added.
