Media mogul Tyler Perry is set to rethink an upcoming $800 million studio expansion amid the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> in modern media.<\/p>\n Perry told the Hollywood Reporter<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that his new development would be shelved as there was \u201cno need to it\u201d due to his recent observations of the AI text-to-chat tool Sora.<\/p>\n Sora is the AI app developed by OpenAI<\/u><\/a> and allows users to generate snippets of sixty-second video clips from a few lines of text<\/a>. The tool is currently in a testing and security phase to limit the way the potential outputs of the app could be used to misinform<\/a> or misdirect people<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n Perry would go on to say that he has \u201cbeen watching AI very closely and watching the advancements very closely. I was in the middle of, and have been planning for the last four years, about an $800 million expansion at the studio, which would\u2019ve increased the backlot a tremendous size \u2014 we were adding 12 more soundstages.\u201d<\/p>\n His construction work is now \u201cindefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I\u2019m seeing. I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it\u2019s able to do.\u201d<\/p>\n Perry continued that he would no longer have to be limited by location or have to travel for example.<\/p>\n \u201cIf I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it\u2019s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing. If I wanted to have two people in the living room in the mountains, I don\u2019t have to build a set in the mountains, I don\u2019t have to put a set on my lot. I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me,\u201d he said in the interview.<\/p>\nStopping the studio<\/h2>\n
