Manufacturer Panic promises a 14-minute presentation chock full of new games that may or may not make use of the console\u2019s weird little crank.<\/p>\n<p>We only know one game that\u2019ll be featured at the event, but it\u2019s a doozy. Lucas Pope, the creator behind <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/indie-favorite-papers-please-has-sold-5-million-copies-171537016.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Papers, Please;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-10-04-return-obra-dinn-consoles-october-18-release.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Return of the Obra Dinn,;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a> has been busy prepping a Playdate title called <em>Mars After Midnight<\/em>. We\u2019ll likely get a new trailer for the game, which was first revealed back in 2021. Panic also says the event will include a \u201crelease update\u201d on the title. So, the long wait is nearly over.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mars After Midnight <\/em><a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/gaming\/mars-after-midnight-hands-on\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:has been called a \u201cspiritual sequel\u201d;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> to <em>Papers, Please, <\/em>though one set on an alien world and not in a fictional cold-war era country. You play as a door guard of an alien colony tasked with letting people in. That certainly sounds a whole lot like <em>Papers, Please<\/em> to me. As you can see, the graphics look absolutely gorgeous and the game certainly makes use of that crank.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caas-iframe-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"bd98f81b-55e4-5bde-8210-c064bb6e9ed8\">\n<div class=\"caas-iframe youtube\" style=\"padding-bottom:56%\" data-type=\"youtube\">\n<blockquote data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MRjRt4NSfKM?si=2uhBQOLI4beGogS7\"><p><noscript><iframe title=\"Mars after Midnight by Lucas Pope\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MRjRt4NSfKM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Panic hasn\u2019t teased any other games that will take center stage during the showcase, so its anyone\u2019s guess. This is a quirky console that practically requires unique gameplay elements, so we could be in for some nifty surprises. The company has said the event will not feature any updates on hardware, for those looking for a Playdate 2.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the console is nearly two years old but <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/you-can-now-buy-a-playdate-console-without-an-obscene-waiting-period-185535666.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:only recently became readily available;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> for purchase. Before last week, customers would have to wait months upon ordering the console before shipment. Now, you\u2019ll get one within two to three days.<\/p>\n<p>For the uninitiated, Panic has whipped up a really distinctive and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/playdate-review-indie-games-crank-170054294.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:magical portable gaming console.;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> The bright yellow Playdate boasts a traditional D-pad, two buttons and, most importantly, a crank-based control mechanism. The console costs $200 and each purchase gets you 24 free games, with two unlocking each week for 12 weeks.
