{"id":207946,"date":"2024-02-25T00:31:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T00:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/25\/south-carolina-primary-trump-beats-haley-but-heres-why-shes-staying-in-race\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:21:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:21:37","slug":"south-carolina-primary-trump-beats-haley-but-heres-why-shes-staying-in-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/25\/south-carolina-primary-trump-beats-haley-but-heres-why-shes-staying-in-race\/","title":{"rendered":"South Carolina primary: Trump beats Haley, but here\u2019s why she\u2019s staying in race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.mktw.net\/im-98367807\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0003025172\" role=\"document\">\n<p>Donald Trump was projected as the winner in South Carolina\u2019s Republican presidential primary on Saturday over rival Nikki Haley, keeping him on track to become his party\u2019s 2024 nominee.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AP_Politics\/status\/1761541805969985827?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"noopener\">called the race<\/a> in the former president\u2019s favor shortly after polls closed statewide at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>While Haley is a former South Carolina governor, Trump was widely expected to win in her home state, given he had a 25-point lead in polls focused on the state, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/republican-primary\/2024\/south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolitics moving average<\/a> of surveys.<\/p>\n<p>Haley is likely to face further pressure to drop out of the 2024 GOP race, but she said Tuesday that she\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/i-refuse-to-quit-nikki-haley-vows-to-stay-in-gop-race-until-at-least-super-tuesday-3387c775\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"noopener\">stay in the contest at least until after the Super Tuesday primaries<\/a> on March 5. She talked about Americans\u2019 \u201cdissatisfaction with the leading candidates,\u201d saying there\u2019s still a chance to restore people\u2019s faith so she \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/south-carolina-primary-this-chart-shows-trumps-lead-over-haley-heading-into-saturdays-vote-98dc54e1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"noopener\">will fight as long as that chance exists<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are expectations among political analysts that she\u2019ll do as promised and not drop out in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Haley \u201cseems likely to stay in the race regardless of the outcome in South Carolina\u201d because she wants to remain the main Republican alternative to Trump in 2024 or perhaps become the GOP front-runner for 2028, said Stephen Farnsworth, a professor of political science at Virginia\u2019s University of Mary Washington, ahead of Trump\u2019s victory in the Palmetto State.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, 77, might face a health crisis or a conviction in one of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/donald-trump-indicted-in-georgia-election-interference-case-a1680068\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"noopener\">ongoing criminal cases<\/a>, and then Republicans \u201cmay have their doubts about nominating him\u201d and prefer an alternative this year, Farnsworth told MarketWatch. And regarding 2028, the Mary Washington expert noted that the GOP has a \u201chistory of turning to second-place finishers for subsequent nominees,\u201d such as when the party tapped George H.W.
