{"id":207479,"date":"2024-02-23T21:34:26","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T21:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/23\/tesla-screwed-a-black-owned-bakery-out-of-16000\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:21:40","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:21:40","slug":"tesla-screwed-a-black-owned-bakery-out-of-16000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/23\/tesla-screwed-a-black-owned-bakery-out-of-16000\/","title":{"rendered":"Tesla screwed a Black-owned bakery out of $16,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/content.fortune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/GettyImages-1963458989-1-e1708721605172.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A baker in San Jose, Calif., blasted <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/tesla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Tesla<\/a> on Wednesday after the electric car company ordered $16,000 of pies for a Black History Month event, only to cancel the order on short notice and leave her out thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Giving Pies owner Voahangy Rasetarinera wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3nIH9Tr6Jj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">Instagram<\/a> that Tesla approached her bakery on Feb. 14 with an order of 2,000 mini pies to be delivered the following week.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, despite receiving a quote and getting approval for the order, Rasetarinera did not get payment from Tesla\u2019s vendor City Flavor, where the order was redirected. Instead, she got a call from her Tesla point person after 9 p.m. the next evening asking her to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/sj-the-giving-pies-tesla-cancels-pie-order-catering-small-business\/14454879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">double the order<\/a>, she said on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the week, Rasetarinera still had not gotten payment. To make matters worse, the next time her Tesla contact reached out, it was to say that Tesla no longer required the order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis abrupt reversal left me reeling, realizing the extent of the impact on my small business,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI had invested time, resources, and effort based on assurances from Tesla, only to be left high and dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tesla and City Flavor did not respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The Giving Pies has a cancellation policy, but because Tesla had not paid the invoice, Rasetarinera was not able to recover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-canceled-massive-black-history-month-pie-order-hurting-small-bakery-2024-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$2,000<\/a> the bakery lost working on the order. <\/p>\n<p>Rasetarinera had employees work extra hours to fulfill the order, and she bought pricier vegan supplies and turned down three other Black History Month catering opportunities to make time for Tesla\u2019s order.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time Rasetarinera had received an order from Tesla, she said \u2014 City Flavor had reached out to the bakery with a catering job last year for a Black History Month event, but turned down Rasetarinera\u2019s quote.<\/p>\n<p>The baker told <em>Fortune <\/em>that a Tesla representative reached out to her on Wednesday to apologize, saying the original point person did not have the authority to promise to pay her. The representative invited Rasetarinera on a factory tour and offered her an opportunity to cater two Tesla events in March.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Another poorly timed controversy for Tesla<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rasetarinera, who is Black, told <em>Fortune<\/em> that the snub had nothing to do with racism and that it was just a miscommunication. Still, there is a deep irony in the carmaker\u2019s snub of a Black-owned business during Black History Month\u2014coming on the heels of multiple accusations of racism against the company.<\/p>\n<p>The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/09\/28\/tesla-racism-eeoc-lawsuit-harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">sued Tesla<\/a> in September, accusing the company of tolerating anti-Black racism and retaliating against Black employees who spoke out. The suit claimed that in instances as early as 2015, non-Black employees at Tesla\u2019s Fremont facility repeatedly used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/28\/eeoc-sues-tesla-alleging-widespread-racist-harassment-of-black-workers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">racial slurs<\/a>. In April, Tesla paid a Black former employee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/apr\/03\/tesla-racial-harassment-lawsuit-award-california-factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">$3.2 million<\/a> after a federal jury in San Francisco ruled that the EV company did not condemn severe racial harassment in a California factory.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla also came under fire last month for <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/tesla-diversity-black-history-month-1851205735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">ditching diversity language<\/a> in its annual report right before Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1318605\/000162828024002390\/tsla-20231231.htm#i605b1b87e9dd4fc1a8af0ddafef749a2_43\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">report<\/a> released Jan. 24, Tesla removed language in the \u201cHuman Capital Resources\u201d section that read, \u201cWith a majority-minority workforce, empowering our employee resource groups to take charge in driving initiatives that attract, develop and retain our passionate workforce is vital to our continued success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tesla published its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/blog\/us-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">diversity, equity, and inclusion report<\/a> in 2020 and has included diversity information in the \u201cEmployees\u201d section of their annual report since 2021, adding <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/tesla-diversity-black-history-month-1851205735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">606 words<\/a> that year, including outlining efforts to \u201cattract a pool of diverse and exceptional candidates and support their career growth.\u201d While the 2023 report includes a statement about Tesla not tolerating harassment or discrimination on any basis, the section no longer includes any diversity information, Quartz reported.<\/p>\n<p>The removal of diversity language in the report follows Tesla CEO Elon Musk\u2019s criticism of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which he called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/16\/elon-musk-calls-diversity-equity-inclusion-propaganda\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">propaganda words<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1742669186130755700?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">literally the definition<\/a> of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Musk also wields DEI-oriented language to bolster his own arguments.
