But when it comes to TikTok health trends, hopefully by this point, we know to pause before proceeding. That\u2019s because health hacks\u2014as magical as they may seem on camera\u2014are often made popular by people who can\u2019t claim to be an expert on the topic of our health. And of course, it\u2019s true that the more bizarre something may seem on the internet, the more buzzworthy it becomes.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been the sinus-cleansing \u201ccure\u201d of sticking garlic up our noses (nope), sunscreen contouring (yikes), and lemon coffee as a weight loss miracle (I won\u2019t go there). The term was coined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@exactlyliketheothergirls?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mia Lind<\/a>, who, in January 2021, posted her first TikTok video taking a HGW. What may have seemed simply like\u2026 walking (already a <a href=\"https:\/\/camillestyles.com\/wellness\/daily-steps\/\">solid form of exercise<\/a>), benefited from the intention she wove into her time outdoors. Lind claimed that what set this style of walking apart from simply putting one foot in front of the other was the energy you brought to it. She said there were only three things you could think about while taking your walk: what you\u2019re grateful for, your goals and the steps you\u2019ll take to achieving them, and, in essence, your hotness.<\/p>\n<p>While the data isn\u2019t tracked, I have to think that this third rule helped propel Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s rebellion against the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/16\/style\/self-care\/hot-girl-megan-thee-stallion-tik-tok.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gatekeepers of beauty<\/a>,\u201d contributing to our culture\u2019s reshaping of the word \u201chot.\u201d (Paris Hilton, eat your heart out.)<\/p>\n<p>So if one trend could positively impact our culture\u2014and our wellness\u2014in such a way, is it possible that other TikTok health trends could as well? I spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stephrobinnson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steph Robinson<\/a>, a holistic nutritionist and wellness influencer, to discuss some of the biggest trends driving our culture today. I\u2019ll offer apologies to everyone who\u2019s contributed to complications in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tastingtable.com\/931827\/the-reason-that-the-oat-industry-is-currently-in-shambles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oat milk supply chain<\/a>. Turns out, you might be better off sticking with dairy\u2014so long as it\u2019s organic, pasture-raised, and has undergone as little processing as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson\u2019s qualms with oat milk? \u201cMost oat milks contain a lot of inflammatory oils (seed oils), gums, additives, natural flavors, and sugars,\u201d says the nutritionist. For daily oat milk drinkers, these factors can all contribute to digestive disturbances and skin issues.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, if balancing blood sugar is top of mind (which <a href=\"https:\/\/camillestyles.com\/wellness\/foods-that-lower-blood-sugar\/\">it should be<\/a>!), oat milk can be a major deterrent to your health goals. Robinson notes that oat milk is \u201cessentially liquid glucose,\u201d spiking your blood sugar and contributing to sugar cravings. It\u2019s a slippery slope, as this can cause our hunger cues to fall out of sync and lead to inconsistent energy levels.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-liquid-chlorophyll\">Liquid Chlorophyll<\/h2>\n<p>As a casual viewer of routines-oriented content on Reels and TikTok, I\u2019m no stranger to the almost inky-blue water my eyes now recognize as a chlorophyll-tinted green. That\u2019s because alongside smoothies, <a href=\"https:\/\/camillestyles.com\/wellness\/coffee-alternatives\/\">coffee alternatives<\/a>, and perhaps an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/internal-shower?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internal shower<\/a> drink (that\u2019s for <a href=\"https:\/\/camillestyles.com\/wellness\/internal-shower-drink\/\">another article<\/a>), creators seem to be guzzling liquid chlorophyll with reckless abandon. <\/p>\n<p>Robinson\u2019s take? \u201cI\u2019m indifferent when it comes to liquid chlorophyll,\u201d she says. While it isn\u2019t necessarily harmful, shelling out for tiny containers of the stuff won\u2019t necessarily do significant good. You won\u2019t experience negative side effects by supplementing with chlorophyll, but in Robinson\u2019s words, \u201cit\u2019s not crucial or life-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChlorophyll is the pigment found in green plants and algae that gives it the green coloring. Claims about alkaline water\u2019s health-transforming capabilities run the gamut. (Though it\u2019s important to note that the majority of research surrounding its benefits has been conducted on animals.) It\u2019s been associated with everything from improved bone density to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9621423\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased metabolism<\/a>. But Robinson doesn\u2019t consider it a wellness essential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am all for alkaline, however, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s crucial,\u201d she says, noting that price and sourcing can make it inaccessible to some. Given its higher pH than tap water, she cites potential benefits like improved hydration, neutralized acidity, and a higher antioxidant value.
