While some are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.24hrcares.com\/resource-center\/invisible-vs-visible-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clearly visible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the eye, many remain hidden. But whether acquired or congenital, one thing remains true: disabilities have existed throughout history. A growing pool of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-022-02849-8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archeological evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some dating back tens of thousands of years, show that amputees and people living with Down syndrome, to name some examples, have been integrated members of their societies across time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though part of the human condition, self-determination continues to be unattainable for many disabled people.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/people-like-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eugenics as a movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 liked to categorise people as either \u2018fit\u2019 or \u2018unfit\u2019 contributors to society. Essentially, it paved the way for deeming people as disposable, something which has been exploited time and time again to justify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bristoluniversitypressdigital.com\/gsc\/view\/journals\/gscj\/2\/2\/article-p168.xml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colonialism and systemic oppression.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Holocaust, an estimated 250,000 disabled people were murdered, and up until a few decades ago, institutionalisation and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurozine.com\/sterilization-in-norway-a-dark-chapter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced sterilisations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were usual treatment across Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Union today guarantees a whole set of rights for disabled people, and has set up initiatives such as the EU Disability Strategy. Awareness campaigns however do not guarantee the enforcement of those rights. Maria Dinold states that while regulations on inclusivity exist in theory, they are yet to be fully practised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled people face a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/infographics\/disability-eu-facts-figures\/#:~:text=In%202022%2C%2028.8,achieve%20a%20fully%20inclusive%20society\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk of poverty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or social exclusion. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/-\/edn-20211203-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulgaria 52.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people with disabilities remain in socially dysfunctional situations. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Croatia also record figures up to 40.4%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women with disabilities face additional challenges. Disabled Survivors Unite, a UK-based disability rights NGO, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/commissioner\/-\/addressing-the-invisibility-of-women-and-girls-with-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed that women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with disabilities in the UK are more than twice as likely to experience violence and abuse than others. They have a harder time finding a job, and when they do, they tend to earn less, have fewer chances to study, and struggle more to get the healthcare they need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many live in households where work is scarce, especially in countries like Ireland and Belgium. And even those with jobs, like in Romania, still face a high risk of poverty compared to their peers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Disability_statistics_-_poverty_and_income_inequalities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical needs are another pressing concern. About 7% of women and 6% of men with disabilities in the EU report unmet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesc.europa.eu\/en\/our-work\/opinions-information-reports\/opinions\/situation-women-disabilities-exploratory-opinion-requested-european-parliament\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical needs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with even higher levels in some countries. A mere 2.3% of senior official or managerial positions are held by women with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/what-we-do\/women-and-girls-with-disabilities\/facts-and-figures#:~:text=Leadership%20and%20political%20participation,legislator%2C%20senior%20official%2C%20or%20manager\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activists, self-advocates, NGOs and communities remain at the forefront of improving this situation, but there\u2019s still a lot of work to be done. Today\u2019s guests lead the charge in this uphill battle, and they do not apologise for demanding fair treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bernadette Feuerstein<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an Austrian disability rights activist and public official, known for her significant contributions to disability rights. She has been playing an important part in the Austrian disability movement, including her involvement in creating a barrier-free Austrian documentary on the topic.She is also the chairwoman of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xn--sli-una.at\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selbstbestimmt Leben \u00d6sterreich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Self-Determined Living Austria).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Walter Mathes<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an actor, art therapist, and cartoonist. He is a community worker and theatre trainer and has worked with people with special needs, addictions, and in penitentiary facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Maria Dinold<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works on the integration of people with and without disabilities into cultural life and to promote social inclusion through artistic activity.
