The company reported $15.7 billion in <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.lenovo.com\/en\/financial\/key_fin_data.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">revenue<\/a> for the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2023, a 3% increase from the same period the year before. It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/lenovo\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">company\u2019s<\/a> first year-on-year increase in revenue since late 2022, and surprised analysts that instead expected flat growth for the quarter. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>Lenovo\u2019s personal computers generate about 80% of the company\u2019s revenue. But the PC market has gone into an extended <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/10\/11\/personal-computer-demand-two-decade-low\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">slump<\/a>, due to macroeconomic headwinds and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/work-from-home\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">end<\/a> of the COVID-era work-from-home boom.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the earnings beat, markets didn\u2019t appear to welcome the news. Shares in the Beijing-based company fell by as much as 8.5% in Hong Kong on Friday morning, though pared losses as the day went on. <\/p>\n<p>Shareholders may have been concerned by falling profits at the PC maker. The company earned $337 million in quarterly net income, a 23% drop from the same period a year ago. A note from Citi analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/lenovo-shares-price-slump-as-near-term-outlook-muted-5a377b77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">pointed<\/a> to a muted near-term outlook including a possible delay in PC purchases by enterprise customers in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s an AI PC?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lenovo is turning to a popular trend in its drive to boost demand: AI.<\/p>\n<p>The company will start shipping its first AI personal computers in the first half of the year, Luca Rossi, president of Lenovo\u2019s PC division, said Thursday. These devices have dedicated processors to handle generative AI tasks locally on the device, rather than on the cloud. (Devicemakers, including Lenovo, are also exploring manufacturing smartphones that can handle AI tasks locally)<\/p>\n<p>CEO Yang Yuanqing said that PCs would come with \u201ca personal intelligent agent\u201d and a \u201ccompressed local large language model.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Importantly, CFO Wai Ming Wong suggested that AI PCs could drive a new product cycle with premium pricing, and could be an \u201cinflection point for the PC industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet the rise of AI PCs might take a while to arrive. William Li, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, forecasts that \u201cpeak season\u201d for these devices to come only in the second half of 2024 through to 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Lenovo is the latest tech company racing to provide products and services tied to AI. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS51851424#:~:text=IDC%20believes%20shipments%20of%20Next,gaming%20and%20digital%20content%20creation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-47dba8f0-0 iRbseu styledLinkColor \">report<\/a> from tech market research firm IDC predicts that over 167 million AI PCs will be shipped in 2027.
