Granted, that headline makes this story sound like a much bigger deal than it is. Do you know the Internet at all?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s true. For more than a year, we\u2019ve been trying to find the source of a strange sound in casinos. A whistle.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible we are the only person excited to have unraveled this enigma wrapped in a curiosity hidden behind a cloak of WTF, but, trust us, this isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve done something to satisfy ourself, so let\u2019s dive in!<\/p>\n

What is this \u201cwhistle\u201d of which we spake a few sentences ago?<\/p>\n

Well, if you play slot machines in casinos, you may have heard it. It\u2019s sort of a flipped version of the infamous \u201cwolf whistle,\u201d which has fallen out of fashion because it\u2019s seen as cat-calling and disrespectful to women.<\/p>\n

The whistle we\u2019re talking about is often used to beckon. \u201cLook over here,\u201d the whistle suggests, with the ultimate goal in the context of a casino floor being \u201ccome over here and play me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The whistle sound plays when the machine is idle, in other words, when it isn\u2019t being played\u2014which is why a player at the machine might never hear it\u2014for a given period of time. Good luck figuring out what that interval is.<\/p>\n

Lots of slot machines spontaneously break into song to get the attention of players, but this is the only machine we\u2019ve found that uses both musical interludes and this very specific whistle.<\/p>\n
