Sam Waterston<\/strong><\/a> has starred in Law & Order<\/a><\/em>\u00a0<\/i>since season 5, and his season 23 departure broke fans\u2019 hearts. His final appearance as Jack McCoy will air on Thursday, February 22. Over the past few decades of his television career, Sam has had the support of his family<\/a> with second wife Lynn Louisa<\/b>. The spouses share three children together, and Sam shares one of his sons with ex-wife Barbara Johns<\/b>. In fact, a few of Sam\u2019s kids followed in their dad\u2019s footsteps by becoming actors.<\/p>\n

When he\u2019s not acting, Sam is busy spending time with his loving family. His first child, son\u00a0James<\/strong>, was born in 1969 to his first wife, magazine editor Barbara Rutledge-Johns<\/strong>. Sam and Barbara got divorced in 1975, and the following year he married former model\u00a0Lynn Louisa Woodruff<\/strong>. James Waterston<\/strong>\u00a0is Sam\u2019s only child with his first wife. He went to college at Yale, where he formed the theater company Malaparte with his friends Ethan Hawke<\/strong> and Robert Sean Leonard<\/strong>. James\u2019s first major acting role was as Gerard Pitts in 1989\u2019s Dead Poets Society<\/em>, opposite lead star\u00a0Robin Williams<\/strong><\/a>. He\u2019s gone on to appear in countless television shows like\u00a0ER, Six Feet Under<\/em>,\u00a0The Good Wife<\/em>,\u00a0Law & Order: SVU<\/em>,\u00a0Chicago Fire<\/em>, and\u00a0The Blacklist<\/em>. His most recent TV role was in the Netflix miniseries\u00a0Halston<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>that starred Ewan McGregor<\/strong><\/a>. James has also appeared on Broadway plays in New York City and Chicago. Elisabeth Waterston<\/strong>\u00a0is Sam and Lynn\u2019s eldest child. She\u2019s an actor, just like her father. Her first acting role was in an episode of Law & Order\u00a0<\/em>in 2000, according to her IMDb<\/a> page. She\u2019s been in the movies\u00a0The Prince & Me<\/em>,\u00a0Good Dick<\/em>, and\u00a0Please Be Normal<\/em>. On TV, she\u2019s appeared in\u00a0The Blacklist<\/em>,\u00a0Quantico<\/em>, and the new\u00a0Gossip Girl\u00a0<\/em>reboot<\/a> on HBO Max. Elisabeth married actor Louis Cancelmi\u00a0<\/strong>in October 2006.<\/p>\n

Katherine Waterston <\/strong>is Sam\u2019s third child. She was born in Westminster, London, and was raised in Connecticut before attending Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. She started acting in 2007 in both film and on Broadway. Her breakthrough movie performance came in the 2014 crime film Inherent Vice<\/em>, which also starred Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>, Owen Wilson<\/strong>, Reese Witherspoon<\/strong>, and Josh Brolin<\/strong>. Katherine also starred in\u00a0Steve Jobs\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Alien: Covenant<\/em>, before\u00a0she joined the\u00a0Fantastic Beasts\u00a0<\/em>film series as Porpentina \u201cTina\u201d Goldsetein. She\u2019ll reprise the role in the\u00a0Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore<\/em><\/a>. Katherine also has a main role in the upcoming second season of\u00a0Perry Mason<\/em>.<\/p>\n

During a 2022 interview with Parade<\/i><\/a>, Sam joked that he and his wife, Lynn, attempted to sway their kids away from show business, but it wasn\u2019t possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife and I tried to distract them from acting, but the trouble is that we were getting away with it,\u201d he joked. \u201cIt eventually became hard to change the subject.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katherine opened up about her background in 2021 with Collider<\/a>, noting that while she might be considered a nepo baby, she worked hard at her craft.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a strange thing when you\u2019re the child of a successful actor because you don\u2019t see all the years of training and blood and sweat and tears and humiliating auditions,\u201d the British actress explained. \u201cYou just see them in their element, thriving. Which gives a child a very false sense of how the business works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katherine continued, \u201cIn a way, maybe studying acting was just some kind of strange exercise for myself to prove to myself and to anyone around who was paying attention \u2014 although I don\u2019t think anyone really was \u2014 just how serious I was about it. Maybe that had something to do with being a second generation actor, that I didn\u2019t want to be perceived as some kind of silly dilettante who is bopping around and hanging off the coattails of her dad, that I was interested and really trying to be good at this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katherine previously dated playwright and director Adam Rapp\u00a0<\/strong>for six years. The former couple worked on some theater productions together. While attending the U.K. premiere of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald<\/em>\u00a0in Nov. 2018, Katherine revealed she was pregnant<\/a> by sporting a baby bump. She gave birth to her first child, a son, in 2019, though it\u2019s unclear who the father is.<\/p>\n

Graham Waterston<\/h2>\n

Last but not least of Sam\u2019s children is\u00a0Graham Waterston<\/strong>. Graham isn\u2019t an actor like his siblings are, but he does work as a producer, writer, director, and crew member in Hollywood. The successful film producer and director is credited for his work on And It Was Good<\/i>, The Ballad of Jack and Rose<\/i> and Blackbird<\/i>. He also holds a costume department credit for I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry<\/i>, according to his IMDb.<\/p>\n

He directed the 2015 short film And It Was Good<\/em>, per his IMDb<\/a>. His father, his brother, and one of his sisters appeared in the film. Sam hasn\u2019t been active in film productions since that project. He\u2019s the most private of Sam\u2019s four children.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
