Under the arrangement, Google will get access to Reddit\u2019s Data API, which will help the company \u201cbetter understand\u201d content from the site.<\/p>\n<p>The deal also provides Google with a valuable source of content it can use to train its AI models. \u201cGoogle will now have efficient and structured access to fresher information, as well as enhanced signals that will help us better understand Reddit content and display, train on, and otherwise use it in the most accurate and relevant ways,\u201d the company said in <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/inside-google\/company-announcements\/expanded-reddit-partnership\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a statement;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Access to Reddit\u2019s data became a hot-button issue last year when the company announced it would start charging developers to the use its API. The changes resulted in the shuttering of many third-party <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apollo-and-other-popular-third-party-reddit-apps-have-shut-down-123149140.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Reddit clients;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a>, and a <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-sees-more-than-6000-communities-go-dark-in-protest-over-api-changes-095311637.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:sitewide protest;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> in which thousands of subreddits temporarily \u201cwent dark.\u201d Reddit justified the changes, in part, by saying that large AI companies <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-will-charge-companies-for-api-access-citing-ai-training-concerns-184935783.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:were scraping;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> its data without paying. In a statement, Reddit noted that the new arrangement with Google \u201cdoes not change Reddit&#8217;s Data API Terms or Developer Terms\u201d and that \u201cAPI access remains free for non-commercial usage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal comes as Reddit is expected to go public in the coming weeks. Neither Google or Reddit disclosed the terms of their arrangement but <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-reportedly-signed-a-multi-million-content-licensing-deal-with-an-ai-company-124516009.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:reported;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> last week that Reddit had struck a licensing deal with a \u201clarge AI company\u201d valued at \u201cabout $60 million\u201d a year.
