Source: BEA, NBER, and author\u2019s calculations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note there is no NBER-defined recession in 2022H1, despite two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. In contrast, there is a NBER defined recession in 2001, despite the absence of two consecutive quarters of negative growth in the latest vintage of GDP (when was it that there were? Source: BEA, CBO February 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantafed.org\/cqer\/research\/taylor-rule#Tab3\">Atlanta Fed Taylor rule utility February 2024<\/a>, NBER, and author\u2019s calculations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Note that for the Euro area, <a href=\"https:\/\/eabcn.org\/sites\/default\/files\/page_files\/2023.11.eabcdc_press_release_final.pdf\">CEPR\u2019s BCDC<\/a> noted two consecutive quarters of negative growth in 2023 GDP, but has also not declared a recession, given increases in employment and hours worked.<\/p>\n<p>What about recession prediction? That\u2019s discussed in this handout (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.wisc.edu\/~mchinn\/e442_ews_s24.pdf\">Recession Early Warning Systems<\/a>). Given the continued yield curve inversions, it\u2019s not surprising that estimated recession probabilities are high. On the other hand, my research with <a href=\"https:\/\/laurent-ferrara.org\/\">Ferrara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/rashad-ahmed\">Ahmed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornerstone.com\/professionals\/kavan-kucko\/\">Kucko<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eabcn.org\/person\/nicolas-chatelais\">Chatelais<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/astallab.github.io\/\">Stalla-Bourdillon<\/a> suggests other predictors. Those provide alternative estimates of recession probabilities. Source: NBER, and author\u2019s calculations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As I note in the <a href=\"https:\/\/eabcn.org\/sites\/default\/files\/page_files\/2023.11.eabcdc_press_release_final.pdf\">handout<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2026the estimated recession probabilities for February 2024 are 56% for the spread plus short rate, and 29.5% for the full specification. This means just because there are no obvious indications of the recession\u2019s onset as of January doesn\u2019t mean that we have necessarily dodged a recession.
