With the U.S. presidential campaign trail on its way for the 2024 elections, this deepfake in Pakistan was done by the person himself while campaigning from jail \u2014 even though he is prohibited from doing so. It has garnered much attention.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Mr. Khan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/deepfake-ai-generated-images-that-went-viral-in-2023\/\">A.I. voice declared<\/a> victory as official tallies revealed candidates affiliated with his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or P.T.I., gaining the most seats in an unexpected outcome that sent the nation\u2019s political structure into disarray.<\/p>\n<p>This video looks like the one Khan released from jail on December 19, 2023 \u2014 with a few updates to the speech and <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/onlyfake-the-deepfake-site-churning-out-sophisticated-fake-ids\/\">declaring victory<\/a> in the election. After the first part of the video spoken in Urdu \u2014 you can hear it spoken in English with English subtitles. You fulfilled my faith in you, and your massive turnout has stunned everybody.\u201d The speech rejects the victory acceptance of\u00a0 Nawaz Sharif \u2014 whom Khan calls a \u201crival,\u201d and he urges everyone to defend his win.<\/p>\n<p>The entire video is filled with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/further-action-required-on-deepfakes-says-british-self-governing-island\/\">historical images<\/a> and footage of Mr. Khan, and remarkably includes a disclaimer regarding its artificial intelligence roots.<\/p>\n<h2>The New York Times points out that this type of AI usage is not unprecedented.<\/h2>\n<p>Prior to the 2022 election, the South Korean \u201cPeople Power Party,\u201d which was in opposition at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/robocalls-made-with-ai-generated-voices-are-now-illegal\/\">developed an artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) avatar of Yoon Suk Yeol, their presidential candidate, that conversed with voters digitally and used slang and jokes to appeal to a younger audience \u2014 and he won!<\/p>\n<p>Politicians in the US, Canada, and New Zealand have employed artificial intelligence (A.I.) to produce dystopian imagery to support their positions or to highlight the potentially hazardous aspects of the technology, as demonstrated in a film featuring Jordan Peele and a deepfake Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p>To appeal to voters in that demographic, Manoj Tiwari, a candidate for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, produced an <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/iranian-hackers-broadcast-deepfake-news-in-cyber-attack-on-uae-streaming-services\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) deepfake of himself speaking Haryanvi for the 2020 state election in Delhi, India. It didn\u2019t seem to be identified as A.I. as clearly as the Khan video was.<\/p>\n<h2>What about the fake robocall featuring President Joe Biden?<\/h2>\n<p>We just had the <a href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/deepfake-biden-robocalls-likely-made-using-elevenlabs-tools\/\">fake robocall<\/a> featuring President Joe Biden \u2014 The caller states, \u201cVoting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again,\u201d in what appears to be an impersonation or digital manipulation of the president\u2019s voice. To counteract the kind of misinformation that artificial intelligence and deepfakes can produce during elections, legislators from both major parties have drafted laws in at least 14 states.<\/p>\n<p>As the U.S. elections get closer and the campaign trail becomes hotter and well-worn, more deepfakes will appear \u2014 just like the Imran Khan video.
