Meta is testing a new feature that will allow Threads users to see what kinds of conversations are trending on the platform. The app has begun testing \u201ctoday\u2019s top topics\u201d in the United States, Mark Zuckerberg shared in <\/a> on Threads.<\/p>\n The feature will surface \u201ctimely topics that others are discussing\u201d and will appear in search and interspersed between posts in the app\u2019s For You feed, according to Meta. Specific trends will be \u201cdetermined by our AI systems based on what people are engaging with right now on Threads,\u201d Instagram head Adam Mosseri said<\/a>.<\/p>\n Interestingly, Threads will <\/em>surface trends related to politics and elections. The company said last week that it would no longer suggest <\/a> in its recommendations unless users choose to opt-in. But Meta has confirmed that restriction won\u2019t apply to its trending feature. \u201cPolitical content can be a topic,\u201d a Meta spokesperson told Engadget. \u201cWe will only remove political topics if they violate our Community Guidelines or other applicable integrity policies.\u201d<\/p>\n The addition of trends has been a long-requested update for many Threads users hoping to make the service more usable as a source for real-time information and updates. The feature was previously spotted in an<\/a> of the app, but it was unclear if Meta would roll it out more broadly considering Mosseri\u2019s <\/a> to avoid \u201cencouraging\u201d conversations about \u201cpolitics and hard news.”<\/p>\n Though AI will determine much of what is surfaced, it sounds like the Meta does plan to do some curation of what appears as a \u201ctop topic.\u201d A team of \u201ccontent specialists\u201d will \u201censure that topics do not violate our Community Guidelines or other applicable integrity guidelines, and that topics are not duplicative, nonsensical, or misleading\u201d a Meta spokesperson said.<\/p>\n For now, \u201ctoday\u2019s top topics\u201d is only a \u201csmall test\u201d but Zuckerberg said the feature would arrive in more countries and languages \u201conce we get it tuned up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
