The product \u2014 also in Coke Zero Sugar form \u2014 will hit shelves in the U.S. and Canada on Feb. 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go to the aisles, you\u2019ll see the amount of spiciness has gone up because consumers\u2019 taste palates have evolved. We realized that could be an opportunity for us,\u201d Coca-Cola\u2019s North American marketing chief Shakir Moin <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cocacola-coke-spiced-new-flavor-d9bd260ceac72cdb5ef1c1f3ad9bfb0a\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">told AP<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Along with its spicy Coke, Coca-Cola is hoping to attract Gen Z customers with another new entry: Happy Tears Zero Sugar, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/food-news\/a46672207\/coca-cola-spiced-happy-tears\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">mystery-flavored<\/a>, salt- and mineral-infused product that comes with a \u201chype kit\u201d of stickers and apparel available only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2024\/02\/07\/coca-cola-spiced-new-coke-flavor\/72484934007\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">on TikTok<\/a> until Feb. 17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Z is super important to us as a brand as they are the next generation of tasters,\u201d Sue Lynne Cha, vice president marketing of Coca-Cola Trademark North America, said in a statement to <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola is wooing Gen Z, a more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texashealth.org\/areyouawellbeing\/Health-and-Well-Being\/Study-Shows-Younger-Generations-Are-More-Health-Conscious-Than-Previous-Generations#:~:text=Like%20millennials%2C%20Gen%20Z%20(born,mental%20health%20and%20managing%20stress.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">health-conscious<\/a> generation drawn to soft drinks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/16\/how-olipops-founders-turned-100k-investment-into-healthier-soda-brand.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">trumpeting health benefits<\/a> (amid reports of Diet Coke\u2019s sweetener being <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/10\/28\/diet-coke-aspartame-cancer-health-safety\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">linked<\/a> to cancer), particularly as its eternal rivalry with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/pepsico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">PepsiCo<\/a> heats up yet again. Analysts have foreseen that PepsiCo could soon <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/13\/pepsi-marketcap-coca-cola-biggest-beverage-snack-company\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">retake the title<\/a> of highest-valued beverage company, though Coca-Cola is expected to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/coca-cola-set-gain-edge-over-pepsico-q4-fewer-price-hikes-2024-02-07\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">solid fourth-quarter earnings<\/a>. Units sold by PepsiCo\u2019s beverage businesses were down 7% in December, while Coca-Cola\u2019s rose 3%, according to YipitData.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last January, PepsiCo launched its own Gen Z-friendly soda, Starry, which achieved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/06\/super-bowl-2024-commercials-pepsi-starry-doritos\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">half-billion dollars in sales<\/a> in its first year, more than forerunner Sierra Mist made in the last four years combined. Coca-Cola, attempting to recreate the irony embraced by the generation, set up a hotline for people to leave reviews of the soda and aired nihilistic ads: \u201cWhat\u2019s the point of OK? What\u2019s the point of anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was a generation, after all, that contributed a historic rock anthem named ironically after the short-lived deodorant brand \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2007\/jul\/19\/popandrock.nirvana\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Teen Spirit<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The soda\u2019s taste was, well, just okay. One consumer likened it to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,1913612_1913610_1913576,00.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">carbonated tree sap<\/a>.\u201d The product sold just one million cases and was pulled from the shelves by fall 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Coca-Cola has embraced the absurd since then: Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna31103164\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">green-tea<\/a>-flavored Coke debuted in 2009, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/drinks\/garlic-cola-japan-s-latest-crazy-beverage\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">garlic-flavored<\/a> Coke launched in 2022. In 2006, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/05\/30\/business\/coke-with-coffee\/index.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Coca-Cola Blak<\/a>, a combination of cola and coffee, made a short-lived appearance before being pulled in 2008. Coca-Cola launched another coffee-infused product in 2019. Two years ago, Coca-Cola pulled its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-14\/coke-discontinues-underperforming-energy-drink-in-north-america\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">energy drink<\/a> after an underwhelming one year in stores.<\/p>\n<p>But Coca-Cola learned from its mistakes when making generation-targeted products. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/diet-coke-millennials-to-boost-sales-2018-2\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">yearslong dips<\/a> in Diet Coke sales, Coca-Cola rebranded the product in slim cans, with flavors such as Feisty Cherry and Twisted Mango to appeal to millennials, who then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/05\/30\/business\/lacroix-sales\/index.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">preferred fruit-flavored seltzers like La Croix<\/a>. After Coca-Cola released the new Diet Coke products in 2018, it reported a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/coca-cola-earnings-q1-2018-beat-2018-4\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">return to growth<\/a>\u201d for the product.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the company launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/media-center\/a-coca-cola-thats-out-of-this-world\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Coca-Cola Creations<\/a>, a line of limited flavors and brand collaborations agreeable to Gen Z and their love of good vibes. Coca-Cola Starlight, launched in February that year, had packaging meant to evoke a \u201cnebular feel.\u201d In June, the company launched Coca-Cola Marshmello, a strawberry and watermelon flavored drink in collaboration with the popular music producer DJ Marshmello. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coca-colacompany.com\/media-center\/coca-cola-creations-imagines-year-3000-futuristic-flavor-ai-powered-experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-bd4ab706-0 dXixpY styledLinkColor \">Y3000<\/a>, a zero-sugar flavor developed with AI, joined its Creations line in September.
